Pre-Operative Instructions
Getting Ready
To ensure you are fully informed and prepared, please review these instructions for your child’s pre-operative and discharge care in advance of the procedure. If you have any questions, contact your surgery center directly.
Pre-Operative Instructions
For safety reasons, your child’s surgery might be rescheduled if these instructions are not followed.
Confirming the Appointment
When you receive appointment reminders or confirmations two weeks before the procedure date, please confirm your child’s appointment. Failure to confirm may result in cancellation.
Arrival Time
You will receive your arrival time the day before the surgery. Note that this is your check-in time, not the actual surgery start time. Arrival may be 30-60 minutes before the surgery to ensure your child is fully prepared.
Pre-Surgery Call
A nurse will call one week before the surgery to review your child’s medical history. It’s crucial to speak with the nurse, as failure to do so will lead to the surgery being canceled.
Parent Presence
A parent must stay at the surgery centre at all times while your child is being cared for.
Allowed Drinks Before Surgery
- Clear liquids (water or apple juice only) can be given up to 2 hours before arrival, limited to 4 ounces.
- Breastmilk can be given up to 4 hours before arrival.
- No other liquids are allowed.
- Your child can brush their teeth but ensure they do not swallow any liquids.
Jewelry and Valuables
Leave all jewelry (including piercings) and valuables at home, as the surgery centre cannot store them and is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
Hospital Transfer
If your child’s condition requires additional care, arrangements will be made to transfer them to a local hospital.
Items to Bring on the Day of Surgery
- Your child’s Alberta Health Care Card and dental insurance cards.
- Your photo ID.
- Custody paperwork if applicable, with consents signed by the legal guardian.
- Documentation for foster children or power of attorney, including any court paperwork.
- A toy, doll, lovey, or blanket for your child’s comfort.
- A book or laptop and a small snack for yourself, as one parent must remain on-site. Water is available at the center.
- A change of clothing and underwear in case of accidents during anesthesia.
Important Reminders
- Do not schedule any other appointments or obligations on the day of the procedure. The entire process from admission to discharge typically takes 2-4 hours.
- Arrange for any other children to stay at home, as it can be difficult for them to sit in one place for an extended period.
